Younger years were all about original Van Halen (I thought the sun set and rose with DLR), and then to Motley Crue...but by high school it was all about Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Suicidal Tendencies & DRI. I met Steve Vai in the rap (? haha) section of Tower Records the year of the Eat 'em and Smile tour...86?
We went to see W.A.S.P. at a small local club (a nostalgic ticket purchase/joke) in the early 90's...we thought we'd just hang at the bar...BUT then NO ONE showed up and Blackie was in full regalia. We felt so bad that we went down on the floor. I also went back stage to Metallica in England and hung with them most of the night (unfortunately that was post-sell out).
It's funny that you mention Dokken -they were one of my 'secret bands' that my death metal friends would have crucified me for liking...(I actually bought the CD again recently...I still like 'Alone Again' shhhhh...)
Of course Pantera was/is an all time favorite and it sucks what happened yesterday...

Hey esgaroth. . .

In fact, as I'm getting into my mid-30's, I'm developing an appreciation for some of the pop that came out at the time. A dear friend and fellow Ldotter not long ago reminded me of some of the great music Crowded House made, as a matter of fact.

Nowadays, I realize there was pop with merit, just as there was metal -- and might have grudging admitted even then, in an unguarded moment. Unfortunately, a lot of the merit was covered in makeup and pastel clothes.

I'm guessing you were a Depeche Mode fan -- maybe even Siouxi and the Banshees?

Ah. . .the Reagan era. It's too bad everyone wasn't as smart and cool as we were, back then.

OH, a MetalHead!!! I was your typical bubblegum pop fan...well, leaning heavily to the New Wave/Early Goth stuff...but even then I didnt have the courage of my convictions in music, so I spent my time soaking up Big Country and other more 'fashionable' pop stars...although I absolutely hated Madonna/Prince.
